The Making of a Vogel Chair - Alesund Chair with dark wood finish and tan fabric upholstery

1. The Design is Drawn

Our team of woodworkers, designers, and engineers work together to sketch, then digitally draw exact specifications of a new model. Sample models are assembled and tested, refinements made, and renderings created.

2. The Frame is Built

Once the design is finalized and the first order is in, we turn our attention to building (or procuring) the necessary frames. The frame structure was finalized during step 1, but may be adjusted to meet specific requests for custom sizing.

3. The Fabric is Cut

Bolts of your chosen fabric or hides of your preferred leather are measured, scored, and cut to the exact dimensions needed to cover each part of your chair. Individual orders are cut by hand, while bulk orders are cut using our CNC machine.

4. The Springs and Bands are Fitted

Depending on the style of your chair, springs, bands, and other forms of suspension are installed under its seat to ensure maximum comfort and reliability. Sometimes a combination of suspension methods are used in tandem, secured with staples and strategically interwoven.

5. The Fabric is Stitched

The fabric or leather that was cut in step 3 is now sewn to create zippered pillow cases and applied welts, as needed. The main portions of the material are upholstered directly onto the body of the chair, but smaller elements are stitched separately ahead of time.

6. The Cushions are Filled

The foam stuffing for the seat and toss cushions are now selected, cut, and assembled. Feather-stuffed cushions are filled and foam inserts are worked into place within the cases, each meticulously inspected to ensure even filling and full corners.

7. The Chair Body is Upholstered

Our team of experienced upholsterers stitch, staple, and nail your cover of choice onto the body of your chair, ensuring every detail is paid attention to, from pattern matching and combination upholstery to tight seams and consistent workmanship.

8. The Details are Applied

Final decorative details are applied including contrast welt, nail head trim, and custom legs. Our nail head trim is applied by hand and a particularly popular feature with our clients!

9. The Final Product is Inspected

Recliners are extended, swivel chairs rotated, and all furniture “sit-tested”. Photos are taken from 3-4 angles, and your chair is inspected by our Quality Control expert. The legs of your chair are carefully wrapped, followed by the body of the chair, while your purchase order and sample cover swatch never leaves its side.
